Music Therapy for Treatment of Multiple Sclerosis
The Institute for Music and Neurologic Function (IMNF) specializes in treating patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Licensed IMNF music therapists work with individuals through CenterLight Health System, to help them learn to initiate and coordinate movements. Music therapy may help improve short-term memory issues and cognitive impairment. When an individual needs to improve physical strength and flexibility, specific movements are encouraged through exercise. Combining exercise with enjoyable and creative music experiences can often accelerate the rehabilitation process.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease that attacks the central nervous system (CNS), which consists of the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. Symptoms may include loss of balance, pain, problems with movement or walking, problems with coordination, numbness, paralysis, slurred speech, or loss of vision. The progress, severity and specific symptoms vary from patient to patient.
MS is believed to be an autoimmune disease. The body’s defense system attacks myelin, the substance that protects the nerve fibers in the CNS. There is no cure for MS, but there are therapies that can slow the progression of the disease. MS treatments include medications that relieve symptoms and slow the progression. Physical therapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy have been found to help patients with MS. Music therapy is also especially effective for movement rehabilitation.
