Music Therapy for Treatment of Stroke
The Institute for Music and Neurologic Function (IMNF) specializes in treating stroke patients. Working with individuals through CenterLight Health System and with private patients through the IMNF Music Therapy Professionals Practice, the IMNF helps patients to regain cognitive, speech and motor capabilities that have been lost as the result of a stroke. Our licensed music therapists can help stroke patients to improve muscle control, speech and cognition through specialized rehabilitation programs and techniques. For example, individuals recovering from a stroke can work with a music therapist to help them regain their ability to communicate by singing words and phrases, as opposed to speaking them.

What is Stroke?
A stroke is caused by the interruption of blood to any part of the brain. The interruption of blood flow causes brain tissue to die. Rapid treatment will save the individual’s life and can even limit the damage caused by the stroke. While the damage done by a stroke may be permanent, therapy can redirect certain functions, allowing behavior to be recovered. Acute treatment includes medication or even medical procedures to restore blood flow to the brain. Long–term treatment is designed to improve bodily functions that have been lost due to the damage caused by the stroke. Treatment after stroke might include physical, occupational or speech therapy. Music therapy also has been found to be very effective for stroke rehabilitation.
