Our Story and Mission
The Institute for Music and Neurologic Function was founded in 1995 by Concetta M. Tomaino, DA, MT-BC and Oliver Sacks, MD, to bridge the gap between neuroscientists and clinical music therapists, as they sought ways to reach patients with neurologic and developmental challenges. From shared observations and findings, a bold new mission emerged:

Through scientific exploration of music and the brain, IMNF seeks to develop music interventions that assist the "awakening and healing" of individuals with a wide range of neurological conditions, including strokes, trauma, dementia, Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson’s disease, and developmental disorders.

The IMNF has developed groundbreaking programs in music therapy, and disseminates best practices in music therapy throughout the US and around the world. Today, more than ever, educating the public—and the caregivers in all our communities—is part of our mission.
IMNF Vision 2025
In 1995, the Institute for Music and Neurologic Function (IMNF) was founded to explore the powerful intersection of music and brain science. Now, more than 30 years later, our mission continues to grow in reach, depth, and impact.

Today, in 2025, IMNF offers leading-edge education and training for music therapists, healthcare professionals, musicians, arts practitioners, and family caregivers.

As a leader in the field, IMNF also serves as a hands-on consultant to healthcare institutions around music therapy and arts in health programming. We collaborate with music technology companies to bring personalized, music-based interventions to people with dementia, neurological conditions, and anyone who can benefit—meaning everyone.
